Organizing Layers with Projects

Introduction

A Project is a set of layers. By storing your layers(markers, range rings, tracks, etc.) in different Projects, you can group and organize your layer data.

Every layer you create is stored in a Project. A Project may contain multiple types of layers. For example, you can create a Project to store all your track logs from a hiking trip, or save line-of-sight and range rings for a particular job site, or group a set of GeoPins linked to a collection of photographs, etc.

When a Project is in use, layers from other Projects are not shown. If you work often with a particular map area, Projects can help you keep the area from becoming cluttered with layers.

Creating New Projects and Switching Between Them

When you first start using Terrain Navigator Pro, all your layers are stored in the same Project, given the name Default. If you want to create a new Project, open the Layers menu and select Manage Projects. Press the New button and assign your new Project a name. Any new layers you create will be stored under this Project name.

To stop adding layers to this Project, open the Layers menu and choose My Projects to select a different Project from the list. (Remember, whenever you create new layers, they are automatically added to whatever Project is active.)

To delete a Project, open the Layers menu and choose Manage Projects, highlight the Project you want to delete, and press Delete. Note: Because of the nature of this function, you must enable the Allow Delete All option in the General Preferences in the File menu before deleting an entire Project's worth of layers.

Tips and Tricks

• You may only work with one Project at a time. This is the active Project.
• Any new layers you create are automatically added to the active Project.
• To stop adding layers to a Project, you must switch to another Project (that is, make another Project active).
• Projects may not be combined, nor may layers be shared across multiple Projects.
• Projects may be duplicated. Use the Copy button in Layers, Manage Projects.
• Use the Copy and Paste options (in the Tools menu) in conjunction with Manage Projects to create copies of individual layers over multiple Projects.
• Use the Import and Export commands in the File menu to Copy multiple sets of Markers, Routes, Tracks, etc. to the clipboard. Then use Manage Projects to create copies of these layer groups over multiple Projects.
• In older versions of Terrain Navigator Pro, the Manage Projects menu item was named My Projects, or Change Project. If you are using an older version of Terrain Navigator Pro, use My Projects or Change Project (rather than Manage Projects) in the Layers menu to accomplish all of the same tasks.
