Better road file
The Tom Tom version of roads is terrible. Surely there is a better road file out there. Try garmin
We are proud to announce that TNP 11.04 (released 12/5/2017) includes a new dynamic street layer that is current and fully searchable.

To "BobOfBath":
Actually, my experience with updates from TomTom (and the data set we currently use is the one developed in New Hampshire) has been excellent. I know of many areas where I personally reported corrections and saw them enacted in later data revisions. I reported these corrections to: http://www.tomtom.com/mapshare/tools/If the street layer appears to be 20 years old, I suspect that you have not run the Installer DVD that is sent with each renewal of your TNP subscription. The current (10.41) Installer DVD contains the March 2015 TomTom street layer. If you have lost or misplaced your Installer DVD, you can download an ISO image by logging into your account at terrainnavigator.com.
The other possibility is that you are not looking at the street layer, but the roads that are drawn on the USGS topographic maps. Saddly, the USGS no longer produces traditional hand-drawn maps. Instead, they take NAIP aerial photos (the same data we use) and layer them with TomTom streets (again, the same data we use.) At any rate, be sure that the street layer is enabled in View, Layer Size/Visibility. (If you are not seeing a street layer, then re-run the 10.41 Installer DVD.)

The road information for this area is extremely inaccurate and out of date (by close to 20 years!). TomTom purchased a company from Hanover, NH, that produced street data for them and others. Their engineers were notorious for not caring about correcting known errors.
My Garmin MapSource and even the now-discontinued Topo! from National Geographic has the names correct.

I think that Garmin licenses the same street data from Tom Tom. There are not a lot of providers of street layers out there. Most of them license from one of two sources. There is also Google, but they don't license their data.
That said, we are looking to make some significant changes to our street layer - so we may find a different source.
Also, be sure you install the latest Installer DVD which is provided with your renewal. The street layer on the 10.31 Installer is from March 2015, and is much better than older data sets.
