You can already use whatever you want as a marker symbol, if it is available as a Font on your system. There are lots of font libraries available for download that contain every type of symbol imaginable. However, it would still be nice to use a bitmap as a symbol in TNP, which we will consider as we continue to revise and improve the software.

You can import KML/KMZ files directly into TNP as Overlays – open the Layers menu, choose Overlays and press Help for more details. Once imported, then the contents of the KML/KMZ file can have routes, tracks, and markers created from its data.
That said, it would be useful to import KML/KMZ files directly as routes, tracks and markers.

Likely, this would be implemented as a setting in the Custom Map Preferences. A new option would be to display grid spacing based on the Primary or the Alternate system (or Magnetic Grid, as it is today.)
